Facebook Marketplace Tips

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

1.) If you are look for say, an antique chair, type in "antique chair" then "vintage chair" any synonyms to describe the chair! I have even gone so far as to say "old chair". If you are looking for "brass candlesticks" try "gold candlesticks" "vintage" "antique" etc.

2.) If it something that you really really want and have been looking for, expand your radius to as far as you are willing to drive (plus a few miles). If you would be willing to drive an hour or two to get this item, set the radius to that!

3.) When messaging someone about an item, don't just put "is this available" or one of the other automated responses. Make it personal! " Hi! I love this item! Where are you located and when is a good time for me to come pick it up?" Then proceed with any questions you have!

4.) Set up a prompt pick up time. The seller is more likely to sell it to YOU if you want to get it sooner than if you say "can I pick it up next week

, will you hold it for me?"

5.) This one is a little risky, but offer to venmo them to hold it if you can't get it that day. Obviously use your best judgement, but if it is a little further and you can't

get to it that day, ask if you can venmo them and pick it up by a certain date. I always vet their profile before sending money and usually make sure we have mutual friends!

6.) Save anything that catches your eye, despite the price. Sometimes listings prices will lower and you will get a notification! Also, it helps the algorithm when you are looking for things to show you things you might like that is similar!

7.) If there is something you really love, check out the sellers marketplace profile to see if they have any other items that you will love! Usually they will have items that are of similar style that they are getting rid of!

8.) Don't be afraid of a piece that needs a little fixing! I look through Pinterest and see different items that catch my eye within a styled space. I search facebook for a specific item (i.e. floral carved wood mirror) and see if there is something similar to the look I am going for that I can sand, strip, or paint!

9.) Sometimes if it is something smaller that I am trying to find, and don't mind paying for a little shipping, I will turn on the filter to show items that can be shipped! I have even gotten chandeliers that have shipped for cheap!

10.) Don't be afraid to ask if the price is negotiable! If it is something that looks like it will sell fast, it is best to offer full price or close to it, but if you see it has been listed for a while (you can also tell when it has been marked down), make an offer! The worst they can say is "No" and you can offer more!

11.) I use Mercari and Poshmark a lot too! I love these apps because usually their shipping is smaller and it would be the same as me driving to go get an item! Also, you can put an offer in and don't always have to pay for what they are listing it for! They have some great deals!
